My brother, the butcher, is all about ribs and brisket. He like to smoke them low and slow overnight. We do not have a smoker.

I feel like my sourdough therapy is a long enough process. I don't need another food adventure right now.

Talk to me in the winter though, if we are still in this whole remote learning and quarantine thing.

The secret to perfectly tender ribs, no matter where you cook them, is to keep them low and slow.

Easy oven baked ribs are very, very delicious. Save those for a rainy day.

I am also a huge fan of the super sped-up process of Instant Pot ribs. I even have a recipe in my book for Mexican Coke and Lime BBQ Ribs.

My latest obsession has been these grilled BBQ ribs on the gas grill.

The kids play in their kiddie pool all day while I sit and monitor the grill temperature. Get your grill to 300 degrees F with all burners on low.

Combine some apple juice and apple cider vinegar in one of those giant, foil turkey pans.

Remove the silver skin off the ribs, rub each side down with your favorite blend of spices. I really like cayenne, brown sugar, mustard powder, dried minced garlic, dried minced onion, salt, and pepper.

Feel free to add in some smoked paprika or chili powder or even some crushed red pepper flakes for more heat. The spices can be easily tailored to your crowd.

Lay the ribs in the pan and cover with foil.

Place the foil tray with the ribs in the center of the grill. Keep that temperature at 300. After an hour to an hour and a half, the ribs should have an internal temperature of about 165-170 degrees F.

Take them off the grill, slather with your favorite BBQ sauce. Turn your burners up to medium/high and then return to the grill for about 5-7 minutes a side.

You want to get a nice, quick char on the ribs.

These ribs are juicy and tender and in the grand scheme of thing, not a lot of work.

Looks like you'll be having BBQ ribs for your 4th of July BBQ this year!

Ingredients

  • 2 racks baby back pork ribs
  • 2 tbsp light brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp granulated garlic
  • 1 tsp dried minced onion
  • 1 tsp ground mustard
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika(optional)
  • 3/4 cup apple juice
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • large foil pan
  • tin foil
  • favorite bbq sauce

Instructions

  1. Turn all burners on your gas grill to low. Leave the grill covered. Let the temperature rise to 300 degrees F.
  2. Remove the silver skin off the back of the ribs.
  3. Mix all the dry spices together in a small bowl. Rub the spice blend over both sides of the ribs.
  4. Add the apple juice and apple cider vinegar to the foil pan. Lay the ribs in the pan and cover tightly with foil. Place the pan on the grill and close the grill cover.
  5. Grill the ribs for 60-90 minutes at 300 degrees with the grill closed the whole time. Once the internal temperature reads 165-170, the ribs are done.
  6. Carefully bring the foil pan inside. Remove the ribs and transfer to a large baking sheet. Slather each side of the ribs with your favorite sauce.
  7. Increase the heat on each burner to medium/high. I usually keep the two outside burners on high and the middle one low/medium.
  8. Grill each rack for about 5-7 minutes per side, adding more sauce as needed. When the ribs start to slightly char, they are done.
  9. Let the ribs rest for 5 minutes before slicing and eating.
